Then there was trouble with King MINOS and the MINOTAUR. The King fretted as THESEUS set off happily with a boatload of sacrificial victims to sort it all out. Which of course he did with the aid of ARIADNE and a ball of string. Amazing stuff.

Archaeologists also have contributed to the body of contemporary knowledge about Greek myths, for many Greek artifacts portray scenes from the adventures. Heinrich Schliemann s discovery of the Mycenaean civilization as well as Sir Arthur Evans s discovery of the Minoan civilization unearthed sculptures, vases, and paintings that provided new details concerning the mythological characters and stories. Long after the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations crumbled, artists continued to find inspiration in Greek mythology. This influence waxed and waned, but most notably it resurfaced in the Italian Renaissance, when artists including Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael paired Greek mythology with Christian themes.

Mythology is the rich collection of traditional tales called myths from cultures all over the world. Many myths date back to ancient times. They are stories about how the world was created and why certain things happen. Today the word myth is often used to describe something that is not true. But a myth is not just a made-up story. Myths tell of gods, heroes, and events that a group believes, or at one time believed, to be real. A culture’s myths are often closely tied to its religion.

The protopalatial era began with social upheaval, external dangers, and migrations from mainland Greece and Asia Minor. During this time the Minoans began establishing colonies at Thera, Rodos, Melos, and Kithira.

Mythology is perhaps the most highly acclaimed modern collection of Greek and Roman (and even some Norse) myths. Written by Edith Hamilton in 6997, the collection draws on classical and other ancient sources to retell a wide variety of tales. In her introduction, Hamilton admits the difficulty of compiling stories that have been passed down by thousands of writers for thousands of years.

During this period we see evidence of administrative and economic unity throughout the island, and Minoan Crete reach its zenith. Women played a powerful role in society, and the gold artifacts, seals, and spears speak of a very affluent upper class. The paved road network was vastly expanded to connect most major Minoan palaces and towns, and we have evidence of extensive trade activity.

Knossos, Arkades, Dreros, Cortyn, Lato, and Lyktos become the most important centers of the island which continues to trade with Cyprus, Syria, and the Aegean.

In a different, slightly Tantric version, Ganesha is depicted in a form known as "Shakti Ganpati". Here he is depicted with four arms, two of them holding symbolic implements. With the other two arms he holds his consort, who is comfortably balanced on his left leg. The third eye in this representation, is of course the eye of wisdom, which sees above and beyond mere physical reality.

The son of Aethra and Aegeus, his mother was a one night fling with King Aegeus, including drink and POSEIDON on the holiday visiting list. So when THESEUS was born in Troezen his mum was a single parent. When he was old enough to ask questions his mother told him the answer lay under a rock when he was big enough to lift it. It took him to the age of 66. And underneath was a pair of sandals and a sword belonging to his unknown father.

The temperate climate of Crete with its short, mild winters and its dry, warm summers, along with the fertility of the Cretan plains produces sufficient food supplies to support an affluent local population, and for exports. The inhabitants of ancient Crete --whom we call Minoans-- produced a decentralized culture based on the abundance of the land's natural resources, and on intense commercial activity. While the island appears today completely deforested, in ancient times timber was one of the natural resources that was commercially exploited and exported to nearby Egypt, Syria, Cyprus, the Aegean Islands and the Greek mainland.

The origin of the universe can be explained by modern astronomers and astrophysicists, while archaeologists and historians try to clarify the origin of human societies. In the distant past, however, before any sciences existed, the beginnings of the world and of society were explained by mythology.

Ganesha is thus the ONLY god to be associated in a "physical" sense with the primordial sacred sound AUM, a telling reminder of his supreme position in the Hindu pantheon.
